About Us

Studio hymns consists of four designers, Hailey, Myrlyn, Nguyen, and Stephanie.

The name ‘hymns’ draws inspiration from the 17th card in the Rider-Waite tarot deck, ‘The Star’. The Star embodies harmony, creativity, and hope.

Guided by these principles, we create inclusive, human-centered designs that spark connection and balance. Rooted in passion and playfulness, we transform ideas into meaningful creations that inspire and endure.

We’re looking into spaces that are more interactive, focused on the continued engagement between users and products.

This led us to DIY kits.

At home plant care is a popular hobby, with about 66% of Americans owning a houseplant.

It’s a fun and relaxing pastime that anyone can try, but with picking up any new hobby, there are learning curves.

Plant care requires significant prior knowledge and often involves trials and errors. Participants in our interviews frequently struggled to understand plant needs.

In the digital age, users often feel overwhelmed with disorganized information and confusing directions.

Our target audience–young adults face a challenge while wanting to start a new hobby.

Existing beginner-friendly plant kits focus primarily on getting started and provide little help on resolving difficulties that happen during the process, creating a gap in the market.

This is the difficulty we want to address.

Interview Insights

We talked to one person experienced with plant care and two people new to plant care to learn more…

Myrna, experienced

“It’s sad whenever I had a plant die, it really was hard to know exactly how to take care of them. It’s easier with the internet now, but I have look for that information.”

Wants more accessible information guides and tips.

Cinthia, newbie

“I think with the right tool and guidance, I will feel more confident in keeping my plants alive longer.”

Wants streamlined information from start to finish for beginners.

Mariel, newbie

“It’s intimidating, [plant care] was thrusted upon me and I have to do it. I felt like I knew nothing... but having access to her [a friend’s] knowledge, made it less intimidating”

Needs more than just the bare minimum information.

How might we support new plant owners by guiding them through the plant care process?

Packaging Box & Tools

Construction Process - Pots

  1. Pots rendered in Rhino & 3D printed

  2. Pots covered with air dry clay, beginning by rolling the clay flat with a rolling pin

  3. As the clay was attached to the exterior of the plastic pots and began to dry cracks appeared.

  4. To mitigate the cracking, a thick slip was applied in the cracks and was sanded smooth when dry.

  5. Then a linear texture was carved into a section of each of the pots using a pottery tool.

  6. Finally, the pots were painted using acrylic paint and a Mod Podge finish to mimic ceramic glaze.

Construction Process - Trellis

Single star collapsible trellis

  • Too large of an opening.

  • Single star offers less support for the plant.

  • Doesn’t fit as well in the kit package.

  • More of a complicated assembly.

Multiple interlocking stars

  • Constructed in Rhino and 3D printed for final.

  • Offers more support.

  • Easy interlocking assembly.

  • Customizable.
